Walking Club
Parsley Morning
Walking Club
Gets Students Moving!
- Research indicates that physical activity makes children ready to learn.
- Exercise habits learned at an early age tend to persist into adulthood.
- Childhood obesity is at epidemic
-
proportions in the United States.
For these reasons and others, the Parsley Elementary School PTA started a morning walking program during the 2005-2006 school year. In this program, students walk outside any time (on their scheduled days) beginning at any time between 7:30 and 7:45 and may continue walking until 7:50. This program is optional and all Parsley students are invited to join. Students may participate in every session or as desired. Students in grades K - 2 walk on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students in grades 3 -5 walk on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Students arrive at school in accordance with normal school procedures, proceed to their classrooms to drop off their belongings and check in with the staff member on duty in their rooms and then proceed outside to the walking track. Personal belongings should be left in the classroom.
Before Walking Club begins for the school year, all students will be introduced to the Walking Club Expectations and will be held accountable for these rules.
WALKING CLUB EXPECTATIONS
- Walking Club is from 7:30 to 7:50.
- Participate as often as possible.
- Encourage classmates to participate.
- Walk as many laps as possible during the time you are outside walking. Keep up the pace!
- Have fun walking with your friends.
- Listen and show respect to the parent volunteers.
- Listen and show respect to fellow students.
- Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
- Keep personal belongings in the classroom.
- Understand that any poor choices made can result in “no walking club” for the day or even multiple days.
- WALK ONLY
PLEASE NOTE: Those students who arrive at the walking track at 7:50 or later will be sent back to their classroom.
LACE UP THOSE SNEAKERS AND GET WALKING!
Bank in School
As part of our 2012-13 School Improvement Plan to develop community and business partnerships, South State Bank began a new program called Bank in School on January 9, 2013. Parsley was the first school in New Hanover County to be involved in this exciting program! Students have an opportunity to establish a savings account and bring money to school to make deposits. Accounts may be opened with as little as a $5 deposit.
Community members from the bank will be here one day each month to accept deposits and allow students to do their banking. This will take place in the morning from 7:25 to 7:53. The Bank in School program helps students learn the importance of saving money and keeping track of deposits and savings, which is an important life skill. It also teaches financial literacy, which is an important 21st Century skill.

Counting Money - The game serves a number of grade levels, as you can choose between three difficulty levels; counting to 99 cents, ten dollars, and $100 respectively. For any level, Beginner mode allows you to use any combination of coins and bills to make the total, while Expert forces you to use the fewest amount of bills and coins possible.
